Meet The Team

As the dynamic MD of Tony Jacklin’s management company, Champions (UK) plc, Matthew Hayes is enormously experienced at securing wonderful opportunities for all of his growing stable of clients from the worlds of sport and entertainment. He has enjoyed a great deal of success identifying design projects suited to Tony Jacklin’s unique capabilities. Tony Jacklin Biography

Tony Jacklin CBE is a true pioneer of golf. The first Ryder Cup captain to lead a European Team to victory on American soil, Jacklin is the man who first saw the importance of a professional ‘Team Europe’ mentality and inspired decades of success. When you add that to his history-making achievements as a player, you realise Tony is a key figure in golfing history, doing for European golf what Arnold Palmer did for the game in the America.

After turning professional in 1962, Tony spectacularly won The Open Championship only seven years later, lifting the title at Lytham St Anne’s as the first British player to do so for 18 years. His next major triumph came less than one year later when, at a wind-swept Hazeltine National Golf Course, he won the U.S Open by an incredible seven strokes. As the first European to claim a U.S. Open victory in 84 years, Tony became the first player since Ben Hogan to hold the U.S. Open and Open Championship titles simultaneously.

Tony was a prolific champion across the globe, lifting titles in South Africa, America, South America and Australasia, including the Jacksonville Open Invitational in 1968, and was the first European to win on the U.S PGA Tour since the 1920s. In part due to Tony’s golfing achievements, the European Tour was established and, from its conception in 1972, Tony took eight titles in a ten year period and won the money list in 1973.

However, Tony is equally well regarded for his involvement in the Ryder Cup. Tony played in the original Great Britain and Ireland team six times and had the honour of representing the first European Team in 1979. Arguably the most memorable moment in Ryder Cup history came in 1969 as the sportsmanship that epitomises the careers of two great champions led to Tony and Jack Nicklaus’ involvement in ‘The Concession’.

Tony also went on to captain the European team on four occasions, lifting the trophy twice and successfully retaining it a third time. The victory in 1987 was truly historic as the first European victory ever on American soil. Following his retirement from professional tour golf, Tony has expanded his reputation as a master golf course designer through the operations of Jacklin Course Design.
